Masai Mara E-mail

MAASAI Mara is probably the most popular single destination in Kenya and the reason many come to Kenya in the first place. Why? It is magical, authentic African savannah and, along with Tanzania's Serengeti (of which it is the Northern extension), it has an astonishing density of animals and birds.

The Mara, as it is called, is the generic name for the National Reserve and the Maasai owned land along its borders, which offer the visitor opportunities to learn about a unique but disappearing culture.

The Mara and Talek rivers water it, so from July to October (the dry season) it is the harbour area for the Great Wildebeest Migration, over 1.5 million strong hoofed herbivores and full supporting cast of predators and scavengers that arrive from the Serengeti. It is a truly mind blowing experience to be in the midst of the migration. When The Migration moves South, the human migration tails off too. This is the time for the discerning adventurer to visit and enjoy the resident animals, the vistas and the solitude.

The eastern part is the busiest as it the easiest to reach from Nairobi by road. However the western side, under the magnificent Esoit Oloololo Escarpment, has the highest density of animals but the opportunity to get stuck if it rains!

Every level of accommodation is catered for. Most visitors arrive by road from Nairobi but scheduled flights into Mara are popular.
