4 Day Maasai Mara Travel Plan

Travel Plan

Accommodation: Lodges/Camps Optional depending on availability and preference.

A Choice Of Lodges / Camps

Masai Mara
Named after the Maasai people (the traditional inhabitants of the area) and their description of the area when looked at from a viewpoint - "Mara", which is Maa (Maasai language) for spotted: an apt description for the circles of trees, scrub, savannah and cloud shadows that mark the area.

It is famous for its exceptional population of Big Cats, game, and the annual migration of zebra, Thomson's gazelle and wildebeest from the Serengeti every year from July to October, a migration so immense it is called the Great Migration.

The principle players are the wildebeest, whose numbers appear to have settled at just under 1.5 million, with supporting roles from some 350,000 Thomson’s gazelle, 200,000 zebra and 12,000 eland. These are the main migrators and they cross the ranges of over a quarter of a million other resident herbivores and, of course, carnivores. The lions, hyenas, leopards, cheetahs and lesser predators await the annual coming of the migration with eager anticipation.

In reality there is no such single entity as ‘the migration’. The wildebeest are the migration – there is neither start nor finish to their endless search for food and water, as they circle the Serengeti- Mara ecosystem in a relentless sequence of life and death.

Day 1 - Maasai Mara:

We depart in the morning at 0730 hrs and drive down the Escarpment (stopping en-route to view) into and across the floor of the Great Rift Valley, past the Maasai town of Narok. Arriive to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve in time for lunch at a lodge. Enjoy a short game drive as we enter the park via the Eastern park gate of Sekenani at approx. 1530 hrs. Dinner and overnight at the Mara Sopa lodge or Sarova Mara tented Camp depending on availability and your preferred choice.
